Central and complex sleep apnea treatment

Central sleep apnea may be caused by neuromuscular or heart disorders. Treating these root problems, such as optimizing heart failure therapy, can eliminate central sleep apnea problems.
Below are some of the treatments for sleep apnea.

-Supplemental oxygen treatment

Use supplemental oxygen during sleep may help central sleep apnea problem.

-Continuous positive airway pressure treatment

This treatment is also used to treat obstructive sleep apnea. It involves wearing a pressurized mask which is attached to a small pump, over the nose when sleeping.
The pump forces air through the airway to prevent it from collapsing. CPAP can stop snoring, and thus prevent sleep apnea. Use the device only as directed.

-Bilevel positive airway pressure treatment

This treatment treats the weak breathing pattern in central sleep apnea.
The differences between CPAP and this treatment: When inhaled, this treatment builds to a higher pressure, and reduces to a lower pressure when exhaled. In CPAP treatment, constant air pressure is supplied to the upper passage airway when one breathes in and out.

-Adaptive servo-ventilation treatment

This is an airflow device which observes and stores the breathing pattern in a built-in computer. The equipment uses pressure to normalize the breathing pattern and prevent interruptions to the breathing.

This treatment may be more effective than CPAP for treating central sleep apnea. However, as this is a new device, more research as to the effectiveness of treatment is needed.
